Welcome to the farm

Luke Bryan might have something going here. His song goes a little something like this:

Welcome to the farm
Where you can roll your windows down
Baby, take my arm
Ain’t hearin’ nothin’ such a beautiful sound?

I think I might agree. Yesterday, we took a little drive to Forsyth, GA to visit a close friend’s childhood home and get the full farm experience. It was a gorgeous day and a ton of fun!

Behind their house is a huge wooded area with a creek. Of course, Sophie was in heaven! She and 2 their chocolate labs puppies (who are 7-mo. and already bigger than she is) played endlessly. Never seen her have so much fun!

Then, we had the chance to shoot skeet. Why is it called skeet anyway? Weird.

Farm Clay pigeons

We learned from these two:

Farm Skeet Shooting

Farm Barrett shooting

While I wasn’t great… I did hit a few clay pigeons (I think I like that name over skeet), so I’ll call that a win. Chip on the other hand was pretty impressive.

Farm Chip Shooting

Being from the suburbs of Atlanta, I had never even seen a gun in person before this. As you can see here… I’m not exactly so sure how I feel about it. Once I got the hang of it though, skeet shooting was actually quite fun for this “city girl.”

Farm boots

After skeet shooting, we rolled the windows down and our friends took us on a tour of the property. Gorgeous, huge and unlike anything I could imagine growing up on. Plus, there were precious animals. Like baby goats…

Farm catching goat

Farm big goat

And donkeys… and cows, horses, dogs, etc. I loved it!     Farm donkey

The day finished with lighting the massive bonfire, watching it burn and grilling burgers. Pretty “farm” to me!

We’re so thankful for a beautiful day away and great friends to share it with! Plus, I absolutely love seeing where people grew up and seeing them in their element. Such fun finding out what they love about home!

What’s your favorite thing about “home?” Mine is sitting at the kitchen counter catching up with my mom, but I think I could get used to a little bit of farm life too!

Athens, I love you.

Photo my own, Instagrams on wall… not my own

This month, I fell even more in love with our sweet town than before. While walking through the My Athens gallery on multiple occasions, various Instagrams caught my eye. There were places I recognized without a shadow of a doubt. But, then there were places I had never seen before.

I’ve lived in Athens for 6 years now. That’s 1/4 of my life.

It’s not a large town. In fact, it’s rather small… The small town feel, with everything you could want out of a big city (minus the traffic, thank goodness). After 6 years, you’d think I would have covered some pretty solid ground here… and I have.

However, there are still parts of Athens I’ve yet to discover, restaurants our foodie selves have yet to visit, and sights I’ve yet to see.

The My Athens gallery fanned my flame a little brighter for the Classic City. In fact, I’m thinking of creating a bucket list for our final year here before adventure (ahem… big scary residency) takes us to a new city.

All I can hope for is that it’s equally as wonderful as Athens.

Do you have any suggestions of bucket list items for us? Please share!

Five Truths…

Beautiful Things

My current state of mind is relaxed and joyful. This “chilling out” thing is glorious and needs to happen more often. Vacations are beautiful and perfect and wonderful. Weeks like this always remind me that I need to take a break here and there, even if I think I can be superwoman. Here’s the truth… I can’t be (not all the time, anyway!).

Speaking of truths: a bit back, sweet Marilisa of Young Love in Normaltown offered up her Five Truths and challenged me to do the same. After a bit of thought, here they are, in no particular order:

truth one: I’m a closet craft hoarder. Whenever friends needed something from the craft store in college, they’d always check my stash first. I’ve gone through many craft phases and stock pile from each of them. Knitting, jewelry making, painting, scrapbooking, you name it, I’ve likely got it. I also tend to snag and store anything that I think could possibly be redone or given new life. I can always find something to do with it, right? My mom, a professional organizer, could just about croak when she sees everything I’ve got. Sorry, mom, but this DIYing isn’t going away.

truth two: It takes me way too long to wake up in the mornings… and I’m talking waaay too long. I typically can go through about 5 alarms before actually getting out of bed. Bless Chip’s heart. I’m actually a morning person once I’m out of the covers, but you’d better believe the whole house is awake at that point. In elementary school I had to create a mock-up of an invention. It was an alarm clock that had an arm on a spring that would tap you until you got out of bed. Maybe I should have followed through on that idea.

truth three: I’m terrible at decisions. I think it comes with the anxiety of the “what ifs.” For me, every major decision comes with a serious pro/con list. But it’s not just major decisions. The minor ones are not the easiest either. Chip and I most commonly get in arguments over what we will eat that night for dinner. We usually end up with a frozen meal, The Grit or Siri Thai, truth be told. However, I’m learning that most decisions have a lot less weight than I formerly believed. Lately I’ve been loving this great reminder: “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” ― C.S. Lewis. With lots up in the air regarding our future with medical school, etc., I’m now anxiously awaiting those things ahead, even if they mean big decisions must be made.

truth four: I have a love affair with frozen yogurt. I rarely go a week without asking Chip for a trip to Yoforia or scooping spoonfuls straight from the container in the freezer. Much to my dismay, my sweet hubby is not one for desserts, so my froyo intake is on the lower end since we’ve been married. However, it’s likely a blessing in disguise. No longer do I forgo a real dinner for a big bowl of the deliciousness (Ferrero Rocher, Banana and Peanut Butter froyo topped with Oreos, raspberries and almond slices, please). Let’s just hope that wherever Chip’s residency takes us has a darn good frozen yogurt shop around the corner.

truth five: I always seem to have multiple side-jobs. In college, I won the senior superlative of “Most likely to have 3 jobs at once… in college.” That still rings true, as I love to be able to serve at the communications agency I work at, but also find joy in creating customized bridal hangers/crafts, shooting engagement photos, and helping out with wedding photography and planning on the side. What’s awesome is that I get to see the in’s and out’s of various industries that bring me passion. I have always said that I would love to work part-time at Whole Foods, Fresh Market or Trader Joe’s. Delicious places… and maybe I’d get a discount on the food! Hopefully one day I can add that to the long list of roles I’ve served!

Speaking of grocery stores, I’ll let you in on one extra “truth” that I spilled on a while back. Check it out here.

Well, folks, that concludes my Five Truths for today, plus a little extra one for your reading pleasure. Thanks to Marilisa for the challenge.

Now, I’d love to invite a few friends to join in the fun! Geales, Kaitlyn, Morgan, Chelsea, and Morgan, your turn!

Happy Sophieversary!

Anyone who knows us knows that there is one little girl in our lives who is the queen of the house: Sweet Little Sophie

Sophie in car

Just a year ago, we connected with a local Lab rescue and fell in love with a little pup formerly known as “Puff” of the “Cereal Puppies” litter. We met her and her sibling in Gainesville and couldn’t say no to her endless kisses and sweet spirit. We signed on the dotted line, and she rode the entire way home in my lap. It was Easter weekend and we couldn’t imagine a better “Easter Bunny.”

Baby Sophie

A year later, we couldn’t imagine life without her. The kisses are endless, she can’t go a day without a cuddle session, and she welcomes us with excitement every time we come home. She even bounces like a little bunny, so we guess it never really wore off.

Really, she’s our little furry baby. More than anything, something about a dog in the family just makes life a little sweeter. So, Sophie, here’s to you!

Craving Cancun

A year ago today we flew back from the most perfect and relaxing vacation we could ever imagine. After a week of this view from our room at Zoetry, we were ready to move to the beach forever.

Image

Today… it’s cold and raining in the sweet city of Athens. However, no amount of rain or clouds could cover up that sunshiney feeling of honeymoon memories. (Yes… cue the “awws.”)

In honor of our fabulous trip, Chip and I made delicious avocado pico de gallo and orange mango margaritas yesterday. And per usual, I wasn’t even done taking pictures before Chip was already getting a second pico helping. But, rightly so, as it was seriously so good. Complete with goodies from our first (and amazing) trip to the Dekalb Farmer’s Market and our latest produce basket, we were loving it.

Avocado Pico de Gallo

No doubt that my super-on-sale mini margarita glasses that I found at Bed, Bath and Beyond really added to the whole experience. I am probably a little bit too giddy about them. I mean… 11 of them for $3.50? You’d be giddy too, admit it.

Overall, I’m really ready for another beach vacation. I’ll even take the lake. Just get me some sun, water and a good book, and I’m there.

Allright friends, meet you on the sand.

Celebrating one year!

It’s hard to believe, but today marks 1-year since my sweet husband and I said I do. It was a beautiful day, and the memories from this past year are even sweeter. I am so thankful for the way he loves me, encourages me and challenges me every day.

And we’ll be dancing until the very end! Here’s to many more years, sweet Chipper. I love you!

Let your faith be bigger than your fear.

Last week’s “Grace” print making was in honor of one of my closest friends’ birthdays. This week’s was for one of the people who supports my creative endeavors most… and truly is one of the most encouraging and loving people I know: Pam Stevens.

Image

Pam is the wife of the wonderful couple who leads our small group. They open their house up to us each week and serve with their whole hearts. They also feed us delicious food and provide us with our weekly dose of root beer. Needless to say, we’re so thankful for Pam and Steve, her husband.

After finding this quote on her Pinterest board, I couldn’t help myself but to create something lovely for her. The best moment was when she looked at it and said… “Oh you painted this for ME!”

It really is a joy bringing joy to others…

Grace

Lately, I’ve been inspired by lovely phrases, fancy fonts and beautiful prints on Pinterest.

This morning, I gave it a go on creating the first of many. I fully believe handmade gifts are the best kind of gifts, so in honor of my sweet friend’s (and co-worker’s) birthday…

Such a perfect reminder of grace, rather than perfection, each day. And so therapeutic… I see many more print-making and watercoloring in the future.

A Biltmore Proposal: Lance + Melissa

There are few moments in a couple’s life that are more exciting than an engagement. So, imagine getting to be a “fly-on-the-wall” capturing every second of that memory. Well, I found out this weekend that it’s pretty amazing.

When our friend and Chip’s former roommate, Lance, asked Chip if he thought I’d be interested in photographing his proposal to his sweet girlfriend, Melissa, Chip instantly said yes. Then Lance topped that with the fact that the proposal would be at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Ok, twist our arms.

Plus, it gave us the perfect excuse to celebrate our 1-year anniversary a little early on a weekend getaway!

On Saturday, we sneakily climbed up the hill overlooking the Biltmore to document the big moment – or “Operation Wedding Cake” as Chip dubbed it.

Biltmore

While I was nervous we were going to be seen, Chip was calm as can be and kept commenting on how he felt like a spy… and was loving every moment.

After some stealthy hiding among trees and bushes, I was able to snap a few photos before texting Lance to tell him we were ready!

From the back

After a few moments of chatting, Lance reached for his pocket to pull out the stunner of a ring.

Reaching for the ring

And like a true Southern gentleman, down on one knee he went to ask Melissa to be his wife!

On one knee

She said YES!

She said yes

And then after a few moments found us, as I was now skipping around with excitement like a little kid in a candy shop. I seriously love documenting special moments and this one certainly qualified as that!

Found the photographer

Lance was not only thoughtful and smart enough to have a photographer come for the proposal, but also planned to leave a bit of time before the entrance time for the Biltmore tour. We got to get some great engagement photos at the place where it all happened!

Pure joy

What a sweet time to celebrate with friends! I have been talking about how special it was all weekend. I truly believe that every girl wants to remember that moment when her future husband proposes. I’m just honored that Lance thought of me to make that possible through photos! Such a treat!

Now, we just can’t wait for this sweet couple’s wedding later this year! Congratulations, Lance and Melissa – we wish you all the best!
